The UFC crosses the northern border for one of the most anticipated battles of 2011 as Jon Jones takes on Lyoto Machida for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, in UFC 140 in Toronto, Canada.

Jones is one of the best strikers in the UFC but he is also dangerous if the fight gets to the ground. Machida is also dangerous on the ground and we have already seen how dangerous he can be with his quick feet on the front kick. The fight is too close to pick and it makes for the match of styles all year in the UFC.

Tito Ortiz is quickly becoming a fan favorite after years of being known as the Huntington Beach Bad Boy. Ortiz will take on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on the undercard of Jones vs. Machida and this is another fight that will not disappoint.

Nogueira knows one speed and he is not smart enough to stop coming at a fighter once he is hurt. Ortiz is healthy for the first time in five years and he is like a new man in the ring. This fight will not go the distance but the fans will get their money’s worth on this one.

Frank Mir takes on “Big Nog” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a heavyweight battle. This fight could be the last fight for the loser. Both Mir and Nogueira have looked bad in recent fights and if one of them puts in a poor performance they will be kicked to the curb by Dan White. The pressure is on both fighters.

UFC 125 will feature the long awaited rematch between new light weight kingpin Frankie Edgar, and unbeaten challenger Gray Maynard. Edgar, is looking to solidify his hold over the lightweight division, and avenge his only professional loss; Maynard is out to prove that he is the best of the best among the UFC lightweights.

Maynard is a -150 favorite in UFC Odds.

Edgar is used to being the underdog, and despite his dominant win over former champion BJ Penn, he finds himself once more occupying that roll when he steps into the ring against Maynard. Their first match up, which was over two years ago, ended in the first, and only, loss of Edgar’s career. Since then Edgar has climbed to the top of the division.

Gray Maynard has run through most of the top competition in the division, his last win coming against former title contender Kenny Florian. Despite his winning ways this will be the first time he challenges for the title.

Both of these guys are top notch wrestlers, and both work very methodically in the ring. In wrestling ability Maynard holds a slight advantage, while Edgar has marginally better stand up. The winner will be determined in large part by octagon control.

Whoever can run their game plan will have a huge advantage as the match draws on. Neither one of these guys have huge knock out power. Edgar likes to hang on the outside, sticking and floating his way towards a win, while Maynard is more interested in grounding and controlling an opponent with his superior wrestling.

The team-mate versus team-mate debate is doing rounds with Carlos Condit by declaring he plans to fight Georges St-Pierre in the future once he has seen off Dan Hardy.

At UFC 117, after Jon Fitch defeated Thiago Alves, the age-old debate reared its head again, progressing his UFC record to 12-1. When it comes to title talk and, as things stand, such a record is difficult to ignore, as Fitch is the undoubted No. 3 welterweight in the UFC

At the end of the year, with Josh Koscheck set to face St-Pierre for the championship, there is the possibility that AKA team-mates Fitch and Koscheck would have to square off if the latter defeats GSP. However, to share the same Octagon, both men have so far declared their unwillingness.

Condit could find himself in a similar dilemma if he adds Hardy to his casualty list at UFC 120 and he is currently riding a two-fight win streak. The UFC could easily bill such a bout as the last WEC welterweight champion vs. the reigning UFC champion and the Jackson’s Submissions man has the type of ground game to keep St-Pierre honest. Condit admits that fighting GSP is difficult, but it would not stop him getting into the cage or even possibly placing a wager on hims own UFC betting lines.

He said, “It’d be very difficult because I love my camp, I love training with Greg, and obviously Georges is a big part of the team. We’d have to discuss it and cross that bridge when we get there. Put it this way, I’d love to fight Georges because he’s the man, and I want to fight the best in the world. I would love to fight for that belt.”

Johny Hendricks and Charlie Brenneman will square off in a bout at UFC 117 on Saturday, Aug. 7. These two fighters have fought before, but on a different type of mat.

These fighters were each college wrestlers in the past. When wrestling at their respective universities they squared off. The winner of that particular fight was, Johny Hendricks.

Despite their previous matchup at the wrestling tournament, these fighters will have a clean slate as they face off. The last time they fought there were no gloves present. This fight will test not only their abilities on the ground, but also on the mat.

Each of these fighters has seen a lot of success to this point. They have a combine 19-1 record over their careers and they know how to win fights. Hendricks has fought 3 fights in the UFC, winning each one of them. One of his fights was won by means of TKO and the other two by decision. He has actually never lost a fight over the course of his career.

Charlie Brenneman has fought just one fight in his UFC career to this point. In his 13 career fights he has won all but one fight. He has been able to become a great fighter rather than just a wrestler.

It will be intriguing to see if this fight turns out to be a UFC fight or if they just end up in a wrestling match as they were in years ago. It looks like an evenly matched fight overall.

Paul Kelly has warned the American, Jacob Volkmann at UFC, that his ground-and-pound ‘rips people apart’ and he has promised to ‘hurt’ Volkmann.

In San Diego, when Kelly takes on the NCAA Division I wrestler, he is anticipating a ground war. He insisted that Volkmann would be ‘deluded’ if he stayed on his feet. Kelly has a choked-out Matt Veach as an illustration of his own ground threat, although he has promised his opponent that, if it hits the mat, the fight will only just be getting started.

In the build-up to the fight, Volkmann has had plenty to say on Kelly. After going six fights without a UFC knockout, Volkmann questioned the Brit’s punching power. He warned the 29-year-old to prepare for a painful evening, knowing there is more than one way to crack an egg.

Kelly said, “Some people look for the knockout using ground-and-pound, but mine is all about hurting them and breaking their will. Thiago Silva’s ground-and-pound is for the knockout. I just try to break and break and break them, and before long there’s a load of red stuff coming from his head and the guy’s thinking ‘****, how bad is this cut?”

He added, “If you fight a jiu-jitsu guy, you know they’re gonna hold you until they find a limb. But I’m different. That’s why it was so hard to match me up with English welterweights before I entered the UFC. I wasn’t in the top 10 Brits, but I was destroying people. I left them needing stitches. How many did Troy Mandaloniz need? How many did Matt Veach need? So Volkmann can take it to the mat. How long have I spent on my back in my UFC career? About two minutes. Roli Delgado tried it, tried to make it a boring fight, so if Volkmann wants to do that let’s go. Let’s have it. I’ll end up in your guard and I’ll hurt you.”

Paul Kelly feels that it would be a nightmare for him if he ever had to step inside the same Octagon as BJ Penn. As per him, he says that the reason behind such confession is that the former UFC lightweight champion is someone he respects a lot.

Building a 10-2 record ahead of the clash with the gritty Jacob Volkmann at UFC on Versus on August 1, Kelly is currently climbing the 155lb ladder. Building on the recent impressive submission stoppage of Matt Veach, victory would be the Liverpudlian’s fourth in five fights.

For the lightweight title at UFC 118, Penn set to rematch Frankie Edgar, Kelly fully anticipates that “The Prodigy” will soon by a three-time UFC lightweight champion. In the way of Kelly’s own championship dreams, the Hawaiian is once again a hurdle.

In addition, to view Penn as an enemy, the combative Brit admits that it would be a difficult task for him.

Kelly said, “I’d find it really hard to fight BJ. He’s the one guy I’d find really difficult to fight from a respect level. I’m still pretty young and I’m learning my lessons and getting better, and hopefully one day I can get a title shot. But if it’s against BJ, I’d find that really difficult. I need my opponents to be my enemies. I don’t touch gloves with any of my opponents, and if I fought BJ that would have to stay the same, but it wouldn’t be out of disrespect.”

He added, “He and Anderson Silva are so technically gifted, but the difference is that BJ would never do what Anderson did against Demian Maia.”

Quinton Rampage Jackson will not be Lyoto Machida’s first choice opponent if the pair meets, as expected, at UFC 123 lines.

On November 20, Machida will reportedly meet Jackson. The UFC has plenty of time for a rethink, with the bout yet to be confirmed. With both men coming off high-profile defeats, for their respective careers, a second loss for either man would be damaging.

After suffering the first loss to Mauricio Shogun Rua at UFC 113, Machida, former champion is battling to get back to the top of the food chain. In the first round of that title defense, the Black House fighter was knocked out, and he admits it is Shogun, not Rampage, who he wants to meet next.

Machida said, “Of course, I would like to face Shogun again. Nevertheless, I find it difficult at this time, Shogun is injured and the promotion might not want to make that fight so soon as it can get very competitive.”

With Rashad Evans the next men to face the champion in 2011, taking Shogun out of the equation. Machida’s unorthodox skill set very nicely and would suit him, if the clash were against the fellow former champ, admits Machida. Machida is responsible for the shattering knockouts of Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell. It will be a stiff test for Machida, following the loss to Shogun, to face Jackson, a come-forward fighter.

Machida said, “I think Quinton Jackson would be the ideal guy for me. A guy who was champ and among the best. He is a great opponent, a very tough guy. I have a great respect for him as does everyone else but I would like to test my technique against him. It sure would be a tough fight; he is a fighter who has been the champion. But I believe a lot in my work.”

After Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama was announced as the main event for UFC 120 in London, British MMA fans have been asked to trust the UFC.

England’s two-year wait to host another title fight will continue, because of Tuesday’s confirmation of the October 16 event. Back at UFC 80 when BJ Penn defeated Joe Stevenson, it was the last time UFC gold was contested on British shores.

As Bisping v Akiyama gets top billing, it would appear no overseas marquee names would travel to London, although, by featuring Randy Couture in the main event for UFC 105 in Manchester, the UFC appeased disgruntlement aimed at England-heavy fight cards.

Marshall Zelaznik, UFC UK president was happy to field the criticism. The UFC 120 to UFC 95 headlined by Diego Sanchez and Joe Stevenson proved to be one of the most memorable events of 2009 and it was something he liked.

Zelaznik said, “I understand people being disappointed at the lack of fighters that they may perceive to be their favorite fighters. I’m the same. I’d love to see Jon Jones in the UK because I think the people would love him. But the thing is that the biggest critics are the most likely ones to be buying their tickets for the event. They are the hardcore fans, which is why their opinions mean a lot to us, but we believe we’re putting out the right card. Look back to UFC 95 and the criticisms we got prior to that card, but it turned out to be one of the best UFC events put on that year.”

He added, “There will be a lot of British fighters to get behind for the local fans, and I believe there will be one or two European fighters as well.”

During 2011, to make sure the UFC comes to England at least four times, Zelaznik has revealed some plans for the same.

On the understanding, Jake Shields has entered the UFC that he may only need one victory to set up a welterweight title shot with Georges St-Pierre.

After a stellar career, Shields lands in MMA‘s top organization that saw him become the Strikeforce middleweight champion. In a lengthy catalogue of victims, Dan Henderson was just the latest, which now extends for the Californian fighter to 14 straight wins.

At UFC 121 in October, against Martin Kampmann, Shields is expected to debut, most likely in the co-main event to Brock Lesnar’s heavyweight title defense against Cain Velasquez.

St-Pierre will fight No. 1 contender Josh Koscheck, two months later, and one very clear candidate left to face will be left for the reigning champion.

The UFC UK president, Marshall Zelaznik said, “That’s a fair assessment. If the Kampmann fight happens, you’ve got to remember Kampmann was one fight away from getting a shot at St-Pierre before he lost to Paul Daley. He’s the real deal.”

He added, “So if Jake gets that fight you better believe that he deserves to be right up there if he beats Kampmann. I don’t know how it will play out, obviously Thiago Alves v Jon Fitch comes into the equation, as does the outcome of GSP v Josh Koscheck, but definitely I could see Jake Shields being no more than a couple of fights away from the belt.”

UFC has confirmed a between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir which will headline UFC 119 in Indianapolis. Nogueira is all set to prove that Mir’s 2008 victory over him was a ‘fluke’.

To a card that also features Rogerio Nogueira, Mir vs. Nogueira will provide the main event. For the first time, Rogerio Nogueira fights on the same UFC card as his brother. In a co-main event, Rogerio meets Ryan Bader. A win in this bout will propel the winner into the light-heavyweight division’s title picture.

Chris Lytle welterweight clash against the Matt Serra has been confirmed

The bout between Minotauro Nogueira and Frank Mir get top billing. Against the Brazilian, Mir delivered schooling in the art of boxing. To inflict the first knockout of Nogueira’s career, the former champion peppered Nogueira for seven minutes, dropping him three times.

Just 20 days before the fight, Minotauro has later revealed that he had suffered a staph infection because of which he had spent five of those remaining days in hospital. Dana White, UFC president and jiu-jitsu specialist claims that the rematch would be very different. White showed keen interest to give him the chance to prove it.

White said, “Ever since Frank Mir beat Nogueira for the heavyweight title in 2008, Minotauro has asked me for this rematch because he wants to prove that the first fight was a fluke. On September 25, he gets his wish, and I don’t think there’s any fighter more motivated than he is to even the score.

He added, “As for Frank Mir, he wants to get back in the title picture, and if I know him, he was the first man to knock Nogueira out at UFC 92, and now he’ll want to be the first man to make him tap out.”

If the pair enters into a ground battle on September 25, there will be few better match-ups in the sport, although both of the fighters are coming off big losses, Nogueira to Cain Velasquez and Mir to Shane Carwin.
