MMA – Profile MMA fighter Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Carvalho Machida was born May 30, 1978. He is the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and is a Japanese Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter from Salvador, Brazil. Lyoto Machida is 6ft 1 inch with a 74 inch reach and is known as “The Dragon” and the UFC odds are in his favor to win the title for second consecutive year.

At the age of 13, he earned his black belt. At age twelve, He also started training the art of Sumo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age fifteen. He won the 2001 Pan American Karate Tournament and other amateur karate tournaments.

In the 2000 Brazilian Sumo Championships, Machida was the runner up. In Inoki’s New Japan Pro Wrestling, Machida made his MMA debut. In The Ultimate Fighter 1, He then fought runner-up Stephan Bonner.

Machida fought Michael McDonald and Sam Greco, his record was 3-0, in which he defeated. He then beat B.J. Penn in K-1 Hero’s. He signed with the World Fighting Alliance and began to compete in the U.S. in his debut American fight, He defeated Vernon White. The UFC acquired Machida’s contract, After the WFA went out of business.

Machida won his UFC debut fighting Sam Hoger. He beat David Heath and also beat Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 76. Machida was nominated for the 2009 ESPYS “Best Fighter” category.

At UFC 98, Machida fought Rashad Evans. Machida was crowned the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

In 2009, Machida’s first title defense came when Mauricia “Shogun” Rua fought him. Machida is now scheduled to face Rua in a rematch for the title for UFC 113, with all of this controversy, on May 8th in Canada. Due to injury, this match has been postponed for seven months.
