UFC 112: Paul Taylor vs. John Gunderson
One fighter makes his Lightweight division debut and the other looks for his first UFC victory when Paul Taylor and John Gunderson meet in the Under Card of UFC 112. It will be Paul Taylor’s 8th UFC fight, but the first since dropping from welterweight to lightweight. John Gunderson will be fighting in his second UFC match.
Taylor’s last fight came back in November at UFC 105. He was beaten in a unanimous decision by John Hathaway. At 6’0”, the British fighter was not among the smallest of welterweight fighters. He dropped down to the 155-pound division because he felt he would have a bigger edge.
Gunderson is a MMA veteran who has spent a lot of time with the International Fight League. After an impressive 5-1 stretch, he was invited to participate in the UFC. His debut came in January 2010 at UFC 108 against Rafaello Oliveira. He lost in a unanimous decision.
The fight is a must-win for both fighters. Both fighters are at risk of being removed from UFC competition if they lose. Taylor enters the fight with a 3-4 UFC record, with all four losses taking place within his past 6 fights. Gunderson is at risk of going winless in his first two UFC fights. In the past, 0-2 has been a kiss of death for fighters.
Taylor is seen as the favorite. He has a size advantage and more experience in the Octagon. He is also better at getting back to his feet and Gunderson lacks the wrestling skills to keep him on the canvas.
