UFC 112: Kendall Grove vs. Mark Munoz
Fans will be treated to an exciting middleweight bout between Kendall Grove and Mark Munoz this Saturday the pay-per-view portion of UFC 112 begins. The two fighters have slightly contrasting styles, and whoever does the best job of getting the other fighter to submit to their style will end up winning.
Munoz is one of MMA’s best wrestlers. He earned back-to-back All America honors while at Oklahoma State and was a two-time Big 12 champion. He has an extraordinary 7-1 professional record, with his lone loss coming in his UFC debut in March 2009. He will look to extend his three-fight winning streak over Grove at UFC 112 by getting the much taller Grove into a wrestling match.
After winning the reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter 3, Grove has gone on to have a successful career in the UFC. He won his first three UFC matches before dropping his next two. He went on to win three of his next four UFC fights and enters UFC 112 with a 6-3 UFC record. At 6’6”, Grove has a big size advantage and has a brutal Muay Thai game that Munoz won’t want any part of.
Grove’s length is the biggest concern for Munoz. In order to prepare for the fight, he has “brought in a lot of tall, long fighters.” He is confident that he will be able to exploit Grove’s relatively weak takedown defense and get him down onto the canvas where he can “unleash some ground ‘n pound.”
Although Munoz is listed as the favorite at -170, Grove (+160) is being hailed by many as a strong underdog pick. He defeated another dominant wrestler, Jake Rosholt, in his last match, with a triangle choke submission victory. His recent success over wrestlers and ability to deliver a knockout at any time make him an attractive pick.
