UFC 112: Alexander Gustafsson vs. Phil Davis
The Light Heavyweight bout on UFC 112’s Under Card features two undefeated MMA fighters coming off of their first UFC wins. The undefeated records of Alexander Gustafsson and Phil Davis will be put on the line Saturday as the two up-and-comers seek to continue their respective winning streaks.
Alexander Gustafsson is a 6’5” Swede with a 9-0 professional MMA record. His UFC debut came last November at UFC 105, where he defeated Jared Hamman 41 seconds into the first round. Among his nine wins, seven have been via KO or TKO (six in the first round).
Phil Davis had a tremendous wrestling career while at Penn State, winning the individual NCAA title in 2008. He was honored as an All American all four years. He is also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His UFC debut came in February 2010 at UFC 109 against Brian Stann. He won the fight via unanimous decision.
Due to the novelty of the two up-and-coming undefeated fighters going against each other, many are upset it isn’t on UFC 112’s Main Card. Because it isn’t one of the five fights on the Main Card, it is not scheduled on the pay-per-view broadcast as per the recent UFC news updates. Unless the fight can make the broadcast as a filler, unfortunately many fans will not get to see it.
Despite Gustafsson’s superior overall record, Davis is the heavy favorite. Davis showed tremendous potential in his UFC debut and is much more well-rounded than Gustafsson. However, Gustafsson can’t be ruled out. He has a powerful punch and has proven himself a formidable knockout force.
